KYOTOGRAPHIE International Photography Festival 2024_ Vivian Sassen

Venue|The Kyoto Shimbun B1F (Former Printing Plant)

This exhibition embeds Viviane Sassen’s work in the space of the Former Printing Plant of the Kyoto Shimbun. Viewers are invited to move between the unique worlds drawn by the artist and the palpable history that permeates the exhibition space.
Inspired by the combination of past and present landscapes, the intense colours, the contrast between light and shadow, and the coexistence of different worlds and layers in the artist’s rich and varied works, we chose a design in which the exhibited works also stimulate the surrounding space, highlighting facets of its unique architecture and history. By installing the artworks on the reflective, mirror-like surfaces, we embrace the architecture’s past as a factory space filled with machinery whilereimagining it as a contemporary landscape.
In the imaginary space of this fictional landscape, the invisible depths of the artist’s work meet the spatial depths of the Kyoto Shimbun’s Former Printing Plant. There, Viviane Sassen continues her introspective journey in collaboration with the audience.
