Scenography-Design Concept
Re-presenting the scene that the great photographer Irving Penn once tried to capture.
The venue, the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art Annex, is an RC Japanese-style construction built in the 1930s as the East Wing of the Kyoto Municipal Public Hall, now renovated into a modern exhibition hall with white cubic exhibition rooms.
The aim of our design was to properly present each of the original prints, but also to allow visitors to feel the perspective and discovery of composition that Penn would have seen at the time. The triangular wall, which resembles a shooting set, was inspired by the set Penn used for his photographs.
Throughout, visitors experience themselves as viewers, subjects and photographers alongside the artworks. By crossing these different perspectives, people would be able to catch a glimpse of Penn's world.
