Kadoma City Lifelong Learning Facility (tentative name)

Kadoma City is located in the northeast of Osaka Prefecture and is included in the central business district of Osaka City at the eastern edge.

This facility, selected as the designer in January 2022 in a design proposal, is part of the redevelopment in front of the station, including the former junior high school in Kadoma City, and is a multi-functional facility with a library and cultural centre, positioned to create a new face of the city.

Aiming to create a new landmark that enlivens cultural activities, the building features two concepts: the “Spiral Garden”, a spiralling outdoor terrace space, and the "Gallery Walk", an atrium space integrated with the ground-level walkway, as a space that enables people to circulate between inside and outside of the building. With linear access from a continuous “shelter” (roofed pedestrian space) from the station via the Spiral Garden to a rooftop plaza that can be of use by the young families, the intention is to create a facility that is always a buzzing space, not only internally, but also externally. The use of perforated metal panels on the exterior controls solar radiation and ventilation, creates a pleasant reading environment whilst integrating environmental and architectural design, as well as takes the sightlines into consideration to harmonize with the surrounding neighbourhoods in the station area, which is undergoing large-scale transformation.
